RIP Boba Fett: Star Wars bounty hunter standalone movie gets the axe

Boba Fett, the fan favorite bounty hunter from Star Wars, will not be getting a movie of his own after all. But a new series in the works gives hope to fans.

The Star Wars bounty hunter standalone film isn’t happening after all, sources revealed to Entertainment Weekly earlier this week.

While never officially announced, the Boba Fett movie was anticipated to follow in the footsteps of Solo: A Star Wars Story, released earlier this year, which stood as a companion to the canonized Star Wars films and told the story of Han Solo. The unnamed Boba Fett movie would’ve given similar background and attention to the galaxy’s favorite bounty hunter.

Despite having little screen time and few lines, the jet-pack wearing Star Wars character is a fan favorite. His stoic demeanor, green armor, and mysterious fate in Return of the Jedi (is he dead or is he not?) have made him a Star Wars icon. In fact, the mystery around Boba Fett, his past and his future, is what made the possibility of a standalone film so exciting.

But, alas, it’s not to be.

The Boba Fett movie has been placed on the back burner indefinitely. No reasons have been given, though the underperformance of Solo at the box office and Disney’s considerable list of other future projects may have contributed to the decision. All that we do know is that the project is no longer in development.

But there is still hope for all those Boba Fett fans out there. While the helmeted hunter won’t get a movie of his own, there is a television show in the works titled The Mandalorian, headed by Iron Man‘s Jon Favreau.

The Mandalorian, expected to be released on Disney on their announced streaming service, will not focus exclusively on the Boba Fett character but will instead tell the story of a similarly armored character yet to be named.

It’s worth it to note that just because the Boba Fett movie has been suspended as of now, that doesn’t mean it’ll never happen. Especially if The Mandalorian does well, Disney could very well decide the world needs more Boba after all.
