The Great Alone – Kristin Hannah

After the success Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale saw several years ago, readers were excited when she released another novel this year. The Great Alone hit bookstores in February, and while many picked it up because of its author, many more chose it based on its sunset pink cover – complete with mountain views and a winding road.

But though The Great Alone’s cover attempts to capture the tranquility of Alaska’s landscape, the novel itself focuses on the mental turmoil its main characters face upon arriving there.

One of them, Ernt Allbright, is a Vietnam veteran and was previously a prisoner of war. A changed man, he is unable to maintain a job or lifestyle on the mainland – so he decides to move his family to Alaska. Sadly, the isolation and constant darkness doesn’t do much good for Ernt’s mental health and stability.

And while Ernt’s wife and 13-year-old daughter had hoped the change of location would be good for their family, they soon realize that they’re alone with their problems. If they’re going to pull through, they’ll need to find strength within themselves –  because no one is coming to save them.
