A Spark of Light – Jodi Picoult

Jodi Picoult has released plenty of novels during her career, but A Spark of Light has received an upswing of attention recently due to the current political climate of the United States. The novel is one about abortion rights, a contentious social topic that’s seen more discussion in lieu of the recent Supreme Court appointment, which could determine the fate of Roe v. Wade.

The story opens with a shooting at a women’s reproductive health services clinic — a situation that sounds all too familiar these days. The story is told backwards, offering the narratives of the people in the clinic leading up to the shooting. Through their narratives, Picoult strives to open the conversation surrounding women’s reproductive rights.

While the subject matter A Spark of Light is heavy, the cover art gives off light and airy vibes. The silhouettes of two women fade into what looks like pastel clouds. The pastels give this book a peaceful appearance, even though its story is one of violence.
