Politics and Potter: Comparing Harry Potter to our modern political climate
During the election, many compared Trump to Lord Voldemort but it is important to note why we connect our modern political climate to the Harry Potter series.
Donald Trump was often compared to Lord Voldemort, we the public as Harry Potter and his friends, and everything was coming up Potter fans during the 2016 election. It was an easy climate to connect back to the Harry Potter series but we never really looked at why we did so.
For many, it was just an easy joke to make. We could see the villain before us and call him Voldemort and that was it. For others, there was a deeper meaning. Years before the 2016 election, we saw Harry fighting for what he believed to be right.
Hermione and Ron were at his side, ready to take on the Dark Lord because his viewpoints were not their own and he was willing to destroy whatever he had to in order to make it clear that what he believed was right. Doesn’t that sound a bit familiar?
Sure, the president doesn’t go around murdering people but his MAGA hats sure do represent what the Dark Mark did for the Death Eaters. Everything that is happening can relate back to the series, even somewhat remotely.
On top of that, the anger that Harry felt is what many of us are currently going through. We don’t know how to handle all that is happening in this world and with that, we’re forced to look back at a series that had a similar situation to understand our own feelings. The world is on fire but so was Harry’s.
