The store celebrates Halloween with a high-stakes costume competition while Glenn battles a new piece of equipment for the store.
Superstore is celebrating Halloween the way on it can: with a catty costume competition.
The show has had some truly spectacular Halloween-themed episodes in the past, but this year a high-stakes costume competition means a few employees are creating some elaborate, hilarious looks to take home the grand prize — a paid day off.
Glenn’s announcement that the best costume winner will be treated to a free vacation day quickly pits Amy and Mateo against each other. A heavily pregnant Amy scrambles to find a costume while trying to sabotage her coworkers’ chances and Mateo shuffles through a few different looks before nailing a winner. Personally, we wouldn’t want to go up against Mateo in any arena, but especially not this one. The man knows how to dress.
Meanwhile, Jonah and Garrett quickly discover they share a specific hatred of the Halloween-themed tune playing on a loop throughout the store. Something about Dracula surfing and putting on sun-tan lotion quickly causes the pair to lose their minds.
Speaking of, Glenn finds himself on the losing side in an unwinnable war against technology when a new, automated system for storing carts wreaks havoc on the store. Glenn’s admittedly old-school and the bubbly manager doesn’t appreciate the heads at corporate introduces a new, more complicated way of doing things. Of course, it doesn’t help that the system almost kills poor Sandra.
Because this is Superstore we’re talking about, the show will probably use the holiday to call out cultural appropriation when it comes to certain employees’ costumes — in a subtle, super funny way of course. Historically, Superstore’s Halloween-themed episodes have been more of the light-hearted fare, a nice break in between more serious topics of immigration or voting rights. It looks like this week’s episode will continue that tradition which is completely fine by us.
Every once and a while, it’s nice to just be able to enjoy seeing Mateo channel his inner bird lady.
You can catch Superstore Thursday at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
