Rebecca has done some pretty wild things on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend but maybe leading her friends into a seance because she thinks a ghost is in her home tops it all.
There’s one specific moment in this last Crazy Ex-Girlfriend episode that we’re going to focus on: the magical book. Rebecca, if she hasn’t tripped you up before, sure will this time with her seance, all because she believes a ghost is talking to her because a book fell off the shelf.
Sure, that’s just a typical Rebecca move but with everything that happened last season, it would have be great to see her change her ways. She got so into what people were saying about her online that she completely ignored everything in her life and refused to leave her apartment.
Maybe it was just a symptom of cabin fever and the insane journey that Heather, Valencia, and Paula feed into is just because they want Rebecca to become adjusted to freedom (even though she was barely in jail). Whatever it is, it is one of the more emotionally stunting episodes. It would be so much easier for them to follow along and play Rebecca’s game and that’s exactly what they do.
Instead, what we’d hope to see is her friends taking her aside and showing her what is wrong with her actions. But for whatever reason, most of the people surrounding Rebecca enable her, allowing her to continue this behavior. And Paula, surprisingly, is one of the ones who doesn’t want to believe Rebecca.
Heather and Paula are skeptical the entire time, questioning why Rebecca and Valencia are convinced there’s a ghost. Still, they go along with the plan, which is the biggest problem with Rebecca and her friends.
It’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, so it isn’t exactly surprising that her friends are the kind of people who just enable and enable without any consequences because, let’s be real, when Rebecca gets in “trouble,” she gets out of it by the end of the episode. (Case in point, the beginning of this season. No jail time despite her admitting to all the things she’s done? How convenient.)
Rebecca is the kind of character that you want to shake but you also can’t help but love her. So maybe, to an extent, we can understand why her friends enable this behavior. Even though she can be selfish and throws everyone into these messes, she’s still a good friend who loves those around her with all her heart.
The ghost was a bit of a distraction from her real issues. Rebecca wanted the ghost she believed was haunting her to be at peace, perhaps a reflect on herself?
By the end of the episode, Rebecca was out of her apartment and starting her life again with the help of her friends. Hopefully, we’ll see Rebecca trying to work on herself, and fix how she treats her friends, instead of finding distractions to keep that work at bay.
