Superstore review: Cloud 9 says goodbye to Kelly, but first, some drama
Cloud 9 says goodbye to one of its own and Jonah and Amy’s “fake” fight gets a little too real on this week’s Superstore.
It looks like there’s one less employee Cheyenne needs to include in the Cloud 9 carpool.
That’s right, Jonah’s former fling and possibly the worst-performing stock girl Kelly Watson (Kelly Stables) is transferring stores and Glenn is not happy about it. Any other boss would completely understand Kelly’s reasons for wanting to leave Cloud 9 — her ex-boyfriend hooked up with her pregnant boss on a live stream that was broadcast around the world,,
Not Glenn though.
As well-meaning and naive as Glenn is, can we all just admit it was a bit selfish of him to try to convince Kelly to stay with made-up store awards and an impromptu break room meeting on toxicity in the workplace? Yes? Okay, moving on.
Glenn angers Mateo by presenting Kelly with a “Golden Vest” award in the hopes that the recognition will show her just how appreciated she is at the store. Unfortunately for Kelly, Mateo isn’t buying her Helen Mirren routine. (A catty Mateo is our favorite kind of Mateo.)
The vest feels a bit like an empty gesture at this point so Glenn holds a meeting to address the store’s toxic work environment, and it’s not just Kelly who’s made an example of.
Jonah and Amy, in a bid to convince people they aren’t together, have spent their shift loudly berating each other in front of customers and holding a mock argument in the stockroom. They’ve gotten so good at being nasty that the episode ends with Amy genuinely upset, proving our theory that this whole “secret romance” won’t stay exciting for long.

Meanwhile, Sandra and Carol have a showdown over Jerry. Sandra and Jerry seem truly meant to be together — they both have an appreciation for peanut butter and jelly-scented candles — but Carol had dibs first and that seems to take precedence here. After the store employees suggest the two flip for it, Carol comes out the winner and Sandra says goodbye to Jerry, again. Poor Sandra.
But it’s Kelly (and maybe Cheyenne) that really get the rotting end of the fish this episode.
Glenn’s teachable moment spirals when he has Kelly and Jonah role play as each other in front of the store. That scene inevitably leads to all of Cloud 9 competing for the best Kelly impersonation, which is really just a squeaky voice paired with a bubbly personality. Kelly takes it in stride and Jonah eventually aids her in getting Glenn to sign the transfer slip, so at least there was some kind of resolution between those two in the end.
Sadly, Cheyenne’s problem wasn’t solved as happily. The poor girl spent hours calculating the perfect carpool routes for everyone in the store, complete with charts and back-up plans in case of road closures, only to find out most people actually like driving by themselves to work. Shocker. As hilarious as it was to see all of that hard work go down the drain, I found a new appreciation for Cheyenne because of it. She’s often played as the ditsy millennial on this show, but Cheyenne’s got brains and it was nice to see her use them this episode.
With Kelly gone, it seems Jonah and Amy’s only obstacle to happiness might be themselves. Look, we get not wanting your co-workers in your business, especially when the relationship is so fresh and you still have issues to work through — like the birth of a baby at some point.
But it also feels like their hesitance to reveal their relationship status is a bit of foreshadowing. Maybe the real reason they don’t want people to find out is because that kind of acknowledgment would make this thing feel more real than they’re ready for? After all, a secret fling is fun, it’s fantasy come to life. A bonafide relationship that you’ll have to answer for, that’s work.
