“Guy Love”
The show: Scrubs
This NBC medical comedy was known for its wry wit and silly, interpersonal shenanigans. JD (Zach Braff) and Turk (Donald Faison) are the male leads of the show, and their friendship is both the touchstone of the series and the butt of a good many of the jokes. Even though both have significant love interests (Turk was married, for heaven’s sake) their relationship is so close as to be co-dependent.
The show went on for several seasons, and as was the trend in the late ’90s/early ’00s, Scrubs does have a musical episode that features original music. The whole cast got on board, and the episode yielded quite a few gems.
The best of the best: “Guy Love” (“My Musical,” season 6)
This particular tune features JD and Turk meditating on their friendship. Although JD calls Turk “Chocolate Bear,” they still struggle with how people perceive their friendship. For these two platonic friends, they just can’t bear the world’s disdain (or the very real toxic masculinity that leads to it), so they just have to keep it inside.
Best lyric(s):
“We’re closer than the average man and wife.
That’s why our matching bracelets say Turk and J.D.
You know I’ll stick by you for the rest of my life…
You’re the only man who’s ever been inside of me!”
