Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Will Rebecca ever learn the problem is her?
The season 4 premiere of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend proved that still, Rebecca Bunch doesn’t know how to not be that girl. It’s okay, her friends are teaching her.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend returned last week and we were reminded, yet again, that Rebecca doesn’t really pick up on social cues. When she’s in jail, there are women who are wrongfully incarcerated, women who have murdered, and women who simply just fell down on their luck.
Rebecca put herself in jail. The beginning of the episode showed us that Trent wasn’t going to beat Rebecca but, for her, she wanted to take this as a time to repent for all the wrongs she’s done. The problem with that is that Rebecca Bunch is still a rich white woman who isn’t looking at the bigger picture.
As usual, Heather is the one to show Rebecca how she’s acting by pointing out Rebecca’s privilege to her. But a bigger question comes up: Will Rebecca ever really learn? For four seasons, people have been showing Rebecca her problematic behavior and none of it seems to resonate with her.
From Greg to her father and everyone in between, Rebecca has been abandoned. For good reason, she’s seen these actions as a reflection on those who left her. However, these events are also on Rebecca. She isn’t exactly an easy person to be around.
Thankfully, she has friends who love her no matter what. Paula, even when mad at Rebecca, will always defend her. Valencia and Heather stay at her side, even when they think her privilege blinds her. Hopefully, this season will show Rebecca that her actions have consequences, and that she is also blessed and should use the privilege she was born with to try and make the world a better place.
Rebecca needs to focus on Rebecca and her friends. Greg, Nathaniel, Josh, or whoever else comes along doesn’t need to take her away from her recovery and if she’d only stayed in her program last season, we may not have to deal with Rebecca trying to put herself in jail.
It isn’t that the first episode painted Rebecca in an unfavorable light but it is the first time that Rebecca seemingly understands the problem with herself. For the first three seasons, Rebecca always pushes the blame onto someone else or dismisses what she has done.
The season 4 opener is the first time that Rebecca wants to repent for what she’s done instead of just running and hiding away to keep her secrets. This is definitely the time for Rebecca to start focusing on how she can make herself better. It’s promising that she chose to not go on a trip with Nathaniel, even if he was rude about it.
And whether or not she focuses on herself, it will be nice to see how Greg fits back into Rebecca’s life.
