Charmed preview: Discovering magical abilities and the Power of Three
By Evie Taylor
Sneak peeks have been released for the upcoming reboot of hit sci-fi show Charmed hinting at eerie special effects, with a strong focus on sisterhood.
The first episode of Charmed is set to explore sisters Mel, Maggie and Macy as they begin to develop magical powers, following the sudden death of their mother. After it is revealed that they are witches by their “Whitelighter”, whose job is to guide and offer advice to the three of them, the sisters realize that they each have their own specific ability. Mel can freeze time, Maggie can read minds and Macy is blessed with telekinesis.
Trailers reveal that the sisters will unite to discover who killed their mother and the reason why. Finding the demon or evil spirit responsible will most likely be a season arc, if it is not resolved in the first episode. The pilot will also likely showcase the sisters’ combined power, referred to as the Power of Three, as the trailer below shows the three girls clutching hands and standing in unity.
The girls’ individual powers will definitely add to the action as they attempt to come to terms with and learn to control their abilities. Certain clips released also imply there will be a fair amount of creepy scenes too, with fog and crows creating a dark and ominous atmosphere. Just in time for Halloween!
It’s not all action though. The strong theme of family has been promoted heavily in the trailer, as their mother explains, “You’re better together, your differences are your strengths, and nothing is stronger than your sisterhood. Always remember that.”
Charmed is a show predicted to take a fantastical and magical element such as the Power of Three and use it to explore and represent the relationship between three strong female characters. The sisters’ bond won’t only affect their success in fighting evil spirits, but will also affect how stable their emotional connection is. The supernatural components of a show like this can be used to represent real world and family issues which can sometimes be more effective than a more realistic show.
Charmed begins this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
