Supernatural season 14 preview: Sam and Mary struggle to find Dean
By Evie Taylor
At the start of Supernatural season 14, it looks as though Sam is utilizing all of his resources to locate his long, lost brother.
Following last season’s shocking ending, whereby Dean was possessed by the ruthless Archangel Michael from an alternate reality, tensions are running high for the new season’s premiere this week.
However, it would seem the spotlight isn’t only on Michael this season. In fact, news for the opening episode would suggest the spotlight isn’t on him at all as Sam struggles to find any hint or whisper of his whereabouts.
In the face of having absolutely no clue what his brother’s body is being used for by the newest villain of the show, Sam ensures he’s not alone. Drawing from the help of his mom, Mary, loyal friends, Castiel and Bobby, and recent ally, Ketch, the gang has a lot of ground covered. Although as hopeless as it may seem, despite all their efforts, the preview clip reveals Dean has been missing for three whole weeks without even a sign.
The preview shows Sam reuniting with his mother after chasing a false lead in Atlanta. To travel all that way just to discover the alleged angel sighting was in fact a drunken woman’s over-active imagination must have hit Sam hard. However, his casual brushing off of the disappointment could imply that false leads have become a common occurrence.
It’s no surprise that Michael would be difficult to track down, being the strongest angel in existence and emerging from an ongoing war in his own reality. It wouldn’t be wrong to predict that Dean won’t be found until at least a couple of episodes into season 14.
Consoling Sam, Mary points out what the rest of the “Find Dean” team are up to, revealing that Ketch is back in London. Whether the gang thinks Michael has jetted abroad, or whether they just want to have a set of eyes and ears elsewhere, it’s clear they’re not taking any chances.
In addition to this, Castiel is stationed in Detroit, and Mary indicates her viewpoint that “something will break.” Perhaps Michael will slip up and show himself eventually?
Trailers for the upcoming season have teased that Michael’s plan is to rule Hell.
Although fitting for Michael’s current savage character, this was never something the Michael from Sam and Dean’s world strived to do. The appearances of the original Michael during seasons 4 and 5 suggested the angel had no interest whatsoever in taking over Hell, or ruling over demon-kind.
Unlike the re-appearance of other past characters like Bobby and Charlie from the alternate universe, or “Apocalypse World”, this new Michael is blatantly very different from what we have previously known, which will make things even more fresh and interesting.

Faced with a mysterious big bad who is completely new to this universe, this may be the biggest challenge the brothers have had to face as the threat is unpredictable and is capable of anything.
Is Dean aware that any of this is happening? Possibly, but that doesn’t mean he has the strength to fight back alone. It’s more than likely the brothers will have to combine the help and powers of everyone they know to defeat Michael, and even that may not be enough.
Supernatural season 14 returns this Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
