Our Wonder Woman of the Week this week is Danai Gurira, mostly because we love her, and she’s always doing amazing work.
Season 9 of The Walking Dead starts this Sunday, and, according to Danai Gurira, her character Michonne will play a big role. In an interview, she talked about female friendships and leadership in the show and how we can expect to see more of that.
This got us thinking about Danai Gurira and her work on The Walking Dead and in Black Panther playing two iconic, interesting, amazing characters. Danai is also at New York Comic Con this week, and we think she is always worth celebrating.
Along with her acting chops and playing roles that have secured her spot as a nerd favorite for years to come, Gurira is also working on adapting Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s book Americanah into a miniseries.
She is also an accomplished playwright as well as an activist. Gurira has done a lot of impressive activism and outreach including being an ambassador for Bono’s ONE campaign and starting the group, Love Our Girls. This nonprofit is all about helping women and girls around the world, and they address issues such as education, child brides, and violence against women.
We look forward to seeing more of Danai in the future. We especially hope to see more of her General Okoye in future MCU films. But, on a more serious note, we know she will continue to promote amazing causes and use her platform for good, and we love her for that. (The author of this piece also met her once, and she was one of the loveliest people and complimented the author’s cosplay. So, safe to say, we have a soft spot.)
We will definitely continue to be awed by Danai Gurira’s career and can’t wait to see what she does next!
