Low tier

11. Joe Amabile and Jenna Johnson (17;18)

There was a look on Joe Amabile’s face during this jazz routine — a sheepish smile, as if he knew that he was trying his best, and his best might not be received well. He was a bit out of sync at times with the pro dancers, with Carrie Ann giving him the note to work on his tempo. As Bruno said, though, he seemed to be acting a bit more in the dance, and that’s a step up.

10. Bobby Bones and Sharna Burgess (20; 19)

There were moments in this dance where Sharna Burgess seemed to need to prompt Bobby Bones to get to the moves, and he was definitely late on some of the kicks at the end. Somehow, this was probably still his best dance. “You have the stature to be a really good dancer!” Carrie Ann lamented. “Tone it down,” both she and Bruno said.

He also regressed in scores, but though DeMarcus and Lindsay have the benefit of having a higher floor, Bobby and Sharna do not.

9. John Schneider and Emma Slater (23; 20)

The flared pants of John Schneider’s Elvis costume couldn’t quite hide that he didn’t seem as into this dance as he did his New York Charleston from the first half of week 2. He was having trouble with his kicks and flicks. Carrie Ann basically said as much in her own critique; Bruno said similar, just in a nicer way about how he’d “lost” some of the dance style.

My heart says that I need to rank this couple higher because of that Charleston, but in a week where the top performers were remarkably consistent, it’s hard to justify him making it higher than the top of the low tier.
