18 women candidates to watch for the 2018 midterms

1. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D)

State: New York
Race: 14th District
Platform highlights: If anyone is known for recent primary election surprises, then it has to be Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Even a few years ago, it would have been difficult to imagine that an avowed socialist would secure nomination, much less be favored to win in her election.

Yet, that’s what happened. Ocasio-Cortez refused corporate PAC money and ran on a platform that included Medicare for all and the plan to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement. With that, she defeated incumbent Rep. Joseph Crowley, who also happens to be the fourth-highest ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives.

Ocasio-Cortez also supports housing rights for all, LGBTQIA+ equality, strong action against climate change, and a “peace economy” that demands American military disengagement from all current arenas.

Why you should watch out for her: What does it mean for Ocasio-Cortez to win in her primary? For many, it was a big sign that establishment politics in the Democratic party are growing increasingly unpopular. More progressive politics, like those of Ocasio-Cortez, seem to be more important to voters than toeing a party line.

In November, voters in New York’s 14th Congressional District will have to choose between Ocasio-Cortez and Republican Anthony Pappas. Unlike in other districts, however, Pappas doesn’t seem to be getting much support from establishment GOP politicians and groups, in terms of either endorsements or campaign money.

Even Joann Ariola, chairwoman of the Queens County GOP has said that “now we have a candidate who we honestly cannot be proud of.” So, look for Ocasio-Cortez to make history this November.
