Fear the Walking Dead season 4 finale review: So, no Alexandria?

As for major takeaways from tonight’s season finale…

Morgan has regressed

What has become of Morgan? Fear is not giving us the same man who on The Walking Dead was crafty enough to surround one of his first shelters with clever traps for humans and walkers alike, who survived ridiculous conditions on his own, only to find himself in Rick’s company and help take down the Saviors. Let me emphasize — multiple Saviors — who were all easily much more evil, violent, cruel and quick than Martha, who undoubtedly is one of the worst villains either series has ever seen. Morgan is not the same. It’d be one thing to accept he’s just more peaceful or kind towards others. But it is unbelievable to witness such clueless moves as him reaching his hand back to offer some pills, and think Martha wouldn’t do anything. Maybe Morgan really did lose himself. We can only hope he finds his Walking Dead persona next season on Fear.

As has Alicia

Alicia Clark has been one of the most fascinating characters on the show, aside from Strand and his drunken quips and ability to survive just about anything. But Alicia has seen things, lost family and lovers, and still found a way to come up on top and survive. Way back during “Close Your Eyes,” we were given some one-on-one time with her character. Alicia was seriously struggling with the grief of Nick’s death mixed with the anger for his murderer, Charlie. Unfortunately, that’s the last amount of solid time we spend with her character. She and several others stepped to the back as Morgan and his self-righteous journey took over this season. What a waste of a good character, Fear.

Not one solid character death

For a Walking Dead finale to not have anyone other than the villain (yes, I sound like a broken record, but she was the worst) go down is pathetic. As much as I love core characters like Strand and Alicia, or newcomer John Dorie, it would have offered some umph for the show to take one of them out — either by Martha’s own hands, her poison, or a good ol’ walker bite. Instead, everyone’s smiling and happy, ready to set up shop in Polar Bear’s old HQ. It may be too dramatic to have asked for everyone to have fallen, leaving Morgan completely on his own, doomed to go back to his vengeful ways or just wander the world solo, never wanting to help anyone again. Yea, that may be too much to ask for. But potential antifreeze poisoning that gets cleared up with a few of Jimbo’s Beerbos? Please…

Fear does not deserve more seasons

This may be the biggest takeaway and more so just a hard suggestion I can offer. Season 4 was an indisputable letdown. From nonsensical plots and plot holes to characters who were brought in and killed off just because to again, again, one of the worst villains I’ve seen. We were literally pulled along to think maybe, just maybe we’ll see this crew head off into the Virginian sunset, only to be told nope, we have one more season that’ll maybe get us there. Because who knows what nonsense we’ll have in season 5? If anything, this season could have sped up the storyline to hit The Walking Dead‘s time jump or shocking concept — Morgan leaves his friends in a good place and returns himself. I’d be fine with any of that.

Who knows. Maybe The Walking Dead will do the heavy lifting to connect the shows. At this point, I don’t have any confidence Morgan is ever coming back.
