Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik in Croatia is probably more commonly known as the filming location for King’s Landing in Game of Thrones, but it also recently had a starring role in the last Star Wars main saga movie, The Last Jedi.

Dubrovnik played host to Benicio Del Toro’s DJ and co as it stood in for the casino city of Canto Bight. Apparently the city is being typecast as places where the rich trample on the poor, with Nerdist noting that the Lannisters surely have a lot in common with the regulars at Canto Bight.

“Croatia was the perfect place to film Canto Bight,” director Rian Johnson said in the Worlds of The Last Jedi” featurette. “We’re in this alleyway in Dubrovnik, smashing speeders, it’s just one of those ‘Oh my gosh, what are we doing, this is amazing’ moments.”

Dubrovnik Travel points out that not all of the Canto Bight scenes were shot in Dubrovnik, or not at least on land (some were filmed at Pinewood Studios in the UK, while others were filmed on a boat), but the scene where Rose and Finn escape with the help of the fathiers was shot on the main street of Dubrovnik Old Town.

Dubrovnik Travel reports:

"For the duration of the shoot, Dubrovnik’s streets and landmark [sic] were modified to look even more unworldly, props and green screens could be seen on every corner of the Old Town, and the space horse was parked near the Dubrovnik Cathedral. One of the souvenir shops along Stradun was transformed into a galactic outpost, the street itself got new columns and arches, and Onofrio’s Fountain was given a futuristic upgrade with white neon posts blended into the original design."

There’s plenty to see in Dubrovnik, and we’re sure that you’ll recognize some of the amazing shots from The Last Jedi whilst you’re there.

Saddle up your fathiers and get going.
