3 questions we still have about The Dragon Prince official trailer

The Dragon Prince dropped its official trailer over the holiday weekend at Fan Expo Canada, and we couldn’t be more thrilled about this brand-new fantasy adventure.

Created for Netflix by Aaron Ehasz (Avatar: The Last Airbender) and Justin Richmond (Uncharted), The Dragon Prince takes the audience to a somewhat familiar place filled with elves and magic. This story, however, comes with new twists, turns, and amazing visuals that will have you craving for more.

The new trailer gave us a better look at the characters, the world they live in, and the journey that’s ahead of the protagonists. But of course, we still have some questions. Here are three details from the trailer that stood out to us.

Is the magical egg the titular character?

The basic premise of the show is that humans used dark magic to kill the King of the Dragons and destroyed his egg, the Dragon Prince. Many years later, the human sons of King Harrow, Callum and Ezran end up forging an alliance with Rayla, an elfin assassin who was sent to kill them. From there, they leave their home in Katolis and embark on a quest as a way to bring peace to their warring lands.

Before the trailer, most of us didn’t know how this alliance came about. It turns out a magical egg was the key to making it happen, but is this truly the Dragon Prince? If so, it’s awesome to know the titular character is someone (or something) that hasn’t even hatched yet. We know the show hasn’t started yet, but we can already imagine various situations in which the egg starts to hatch as well as the tension and suspense it’ll bring when it does.

Are Claudia and Soren the antagonists of the show?

Lord Viren is the High Mage of Katolis. He’s also the father of Claudia and Soren. Claudia, in particular, is a dark magic prodigy. In fact, we see her use some of that magic in the trailer, where she summons two wolf-like creatures.

Viren commands his children to “get out there and find them.” Claudia responds by saying she’s going to find a way to stop them. Given this is just a trailer, it’s difficult to say who is “them” at this time, but we’re assuming it’s Callum, Ezran, and Rayla. If that’s the case, then our main characters have their work cut out for them.

Like Avatar: The Last Airbender before it, things got interesting when the people chasing after the young protagonists were characters around the same age. It keeps the show relatable to a younger audience, and it allows characters on both sides of the war to grow in different and unexpected ways.

Does Callum possess magical abilities?

As mentioned earlier, Callum is the son of King Harrow. Actually, he’s the step-son, and he’s not exactly the royal type. While he doesn’t have the finesse for fitting in with that kind of crowd, he is good at drawing. In fact, we see him do some drawing throughout the trailer, but it’s not with a pencil and paper in hand.

Instead, he draws a figure in the air with his right hand and summons some kind of magic from a black orb he holds with his left hand. Is this something unique to Callum? Or can anyone use the black orb to cast magic?

Whether or not he has the innate magic that Claudia seems to possess, Callum definitely has what it takes to make a stand and protect those he cares about.

The journey to deliver the egg to Xadia will no doubt be a perilous one, but we look forward to it every step of the way.
