1995: ER

ER was a medical drama that aired on NBC from 1994 all the way until 2009, for 15 seasons total. The show followed the goings on of the emergency room of a hospital in Chicago, and the issues faced by the staff on a day-to-day basis, both at work and in their personal life. The show also has the honor of being the longest-running primetime medical drama in American history.

ER was a hit right from the beginning. The show switched between the first and second ranking on the Nielsen ratings chart up until its sixth season, and was in the top 5 in America up until its tenth season. That’s a pretty impressive feat in itself. ER was praised for everything from the writing to the acting, and even the directing. It was unlike any other medical drama we had seen before, and fans were eating it up. It didn’t shy away from telling the hard stories, and it definitely drew more than a few tears from its viewers.

Over its massive 15 season run, ER was nominated for 124 Emmy Awards, and won 22, and has been nominated for Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, GLAAD Media Awards and even took home a Peabody Award in 1995.
