Fantastic Beasts: Have we got it all wrong about Leta Lestrange?

The cast of Fantastic Beasts have been opening up about their characters and in a recent interview, Zoë Kravitz makes us question if we have got her all wrong.

When we think of the Lestrange family our minds instantly turn to one of the most evil characters in the Harry Potter franchise; Bellatrix Lestrange. Zoë Kravitz, who will play Leta Lestrange in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, is related to Bellatrix, which has immediately made us all think she too will be just as evil.

However, Kravitz recently opened up about her character in an interview and it has made us wonder if we have assumed too much, too soon.

When speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Kravitz was asked about her character’s reputation and she had the following to say:

"She’s always felt like an outcast because of that and she’s very edgy because she’s used to being judged"

Director David Heyman was also asked about Leta and he too had the following to say:

"“The fact that she is a Lestrange has led some people to believe her to be a bad person. But as with a lot of J.K. Rowling’s writing, you have a rich complex character, and it’s one that Zoe brings to life.”"

Based on what both Heyman and Kravitz have had to say I think we have all probably jumped the gun a bit too soon about Leta being evil. I think what we could be looking at here is potentially another Sirius Black.

It is going to be interesting to see what happens with Leta‘s storyline in Fantastic Beasts but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we learn that this member of the Lestrange family, is one of the good ones.
