Starbucks celebrates fall early with Pumpkin Spice Lattes returning Tuesday

Starbucks is getting us ready for autumn early by brewing up Pumpkin Spice Latte starting Tuesday, and Twitter can’t wait to celebrate PSL!

Starbucks, we heart you for finishing up summer with the pre-autumn return of our beloved Pumpkin Spice Latte. And we’re hopping on Twitter’s PSL bandwagon in a spicy anticipation of this annual Starbucks treat.

Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte 411

Before we get into the social media excitement over Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte return, we want to make sure you’ve got the 411 about this annual autumn delight. USA Today dished up the delicious details:

  • Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte (known to its fans as PSL) officially returns on Tuesday, August 28.
  • PSL turns 15-years-old in 2018.
  • To create the concoction, a tasting committee consumed pumpkin pie followed by espresso followed by more pie to figure out which tastes to accentuate (okay, where do we apply for that gig?).
  • After a close brush with a different name (Fall Harvest Latte), the Pumpkin Spice Latte rolled out in 2003 in a few stores, then went coast to coast in 2004.
  • It wasn’t until 2015 that PSL sippers enjoyed the addition of real pumpkin to the shhhh-it’s-a-secret recipe.
  • In addition to the classic Pumpkin Spice Latte, Starbucks serves Ready-to-Drink Pumpkin Spice Latte, Pumpkin Spice Flavored Ground Coffee, Pumpkin Spice Caffe Latte K-Cup Pods, Iced Espresso Classics Pumpkin Spice Latte, VIA Instant Pumpkin Spice Latte, and two newbies for 2018: Pumpkin Spice Cookie Straws and Pumpkin Spice Flavored Ground Coffee K-Cup Pods.

Twitter turns PSL into tasty trend

Twitter didn’t feel like waiting to start the celebration. However, as Time pointed out, a few social media users seemed baffled that a drink traditionally associated with the start of autumn was debuting even before Labor Day weekend.

For those who believe that the calendar should dictate Starbucks’ seasonal beverages, the earlier-than-ever-before arrival of the Pumpkin Spice Latte and subsequent PSL Twitter trend caused consternation.

But in general, the early return of PSL was greeted with cheers rather than jeers. And Starbucks got in the groove, reassuring a Twitter user that it’s cool (hot?) to confess a fondness for Pumpkin Spice Lattes.

As for us? We’re on board the PSL bandwagon and agreeing with Twitter users who are happy to greet autumn early as long as it means the return of Pumpkin Spice Lattes.
