Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the creator of Riverdale, announced at San Diego Comic-Con that there would be a flashback episode in season 3 and now, we’ve got some intel…
As we previously shared, Riverdale is about to give us not just any old flashback episode. Fans are going to be getting what we like to think of as a “parent’s episode.” And honestly, we couldn’t be more excited.
Except… we really are thanks to new casting news for the episode.
On August 21, it was announced that Anthony Michael Hall would be joining the cast of Riverdale for the flashback episode. According to E! News, the actor will be taking on the role of longtime principal Mr. Featherhead.
As part of the flashback episode, Hall’s character will be shown getting caught up in the drama and games that the students are part of. Considering the students in question are the parents of the current Riverdale gang, there is bound to be plenty of intrigue and secrets sweeping the halls of the high school.
On top of the casting of Anthony Michael Hall as the school principal for the flashback episode, there are a few more things we know so far.
The current Riverdale teens will be portraying their parents in the episode. This means that KJ Apa (Archie) will be playing his father Fred (Luke Perry), Cole Sprouse (Jughead) will be playing his father FP (Skeet Ulrich), and so on. Of course, in the case of Veronica’s parents, there is no way for Camila Mendes to play both roles. Instead, Mark Consuelos’ son will be playing the part of a young Hiram Lodge (which is certainly a fitting bit of casting news).
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has also revealed that the flashback episode is going to unveil some of the secrets that the adults have been hiding from their children since their own high school days. With Riverdale being a town of secrets and lies, it makes sense that many of these secrets would have begun when the adults of the town were in school themselves.
Knowing that some of the adults’ secrets will be revealed adds to the intrigue and excitement for the flashback episode. Plus, we also know that the episode will be a take on the classic film The Breakfast Club (which starred not only Anthony Michael Hall, but also Archie’s mom in the show, Molly Ringwald).
As Gamespot reported, the episode is basically a love letter to The Breakfast Club, not only with its casting, but also with the title of the episode, The Midnight Club. Will we see a group of teens in detention causing hijinks? It is possible, but even if we don’t, we do know Hall’s character is about to go from being in trouble to dealing with the troublemakers.
Flashback episodes can be a great opportunity to learn new things and Riverdale seems poised to capitalize on this idea. Not only are the cast and crew ready to divulge some of the town’s older secrets, but we may finally learn more about the relationships the adults built long before they ever had their own children.
This is going to be our chance to see Alice and FP together or even Fred and Hermione. Were the parents really just like Archie and Veronica and Jughead and Betty? Considering how often this has been hinted at, it is a solid bet that we are going to get to see the original “Scooby gang” in action, and that we will see exactly where the current teens got all of their dramatics from.
We may not know what the official synopsis of the episode is yet, but so far we have some pretty interesting tidbits. It sounds like the flashback episode is going to be another fun one with plenty of drama, intrigue, and secrets.
Just what Riverdale is good at.
