Two characters in Avengers 4 will see a ‘harder edge’ to their characters

Thanos’ finger snap will have a lasting impact on the MCU. And going into Avengers 4, this means seeing a change in many of our favorite characters.

When you have faced down death, watched your friends crumble around you, and find yourself trying to right the wrongs of the past, it will most likely change you as a person. Going into Avengers 4, it should come as no surprise to learn that many of our favorite characters will have a much harder edge to them than they have in past movies.

While we don’t know much about what we can expect in Avengers 4, this is news that is truly unsurprising. In a video for Wired, Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of Infinity War, sat down to discuss the film as part of promoting the home release of the movie. During the discussion, the directors discussed all of the heroes from Infinity War.

And while there were apparently a lot of juicy tidbits, the most noteworthy had to do with two fan favorites who have been a part of the MCU since the beginning. The Russos addressed Captain America and Black Widow, and how we will see them change in Avengers 4.

Joe Russo specifically mentioned these two longstanding heroes and members of the Avengers, saying that fans will see more “hardened” versions of Black Widow and Captain America:

"In Winter Soldier, what we found so compelling about pairing her up with Captain America was that he is this paragon of morality, and she is a paragon of gray. But they’ve grown together, and I think when you find them in [Infinity War], they’ve been the Secret Avengers for two years… they’re like a tight-knit family now. Her, Sam Wilson, and Steve Rogers. It’s hardened all of them in a way."

Even in Infinity War, it was clear that these two have grown a lot over the course of the years, and that growth includes having more of an edge. (You can’t be on the run from your own team without it having an impact.)

After everything Captain America and Black Widow have been through, it makes sense that seeing everyone they know and love get wiped out with a single finger snap would be enough to truly harden them.

While the director specifically focused on Black Widow and Captain America, the reality is that all of the characters who survived the snap heard round the universe are going to be harder for it.  With so many people having been wiped out, it makes sense the survivors would change. And according to Joe Russo, “I think all of those characters, specifically the ones who survived Infinity War — Cap and Natasha — we will see them with a much harder edge.”

Survivors guilt is a difficult thing and whether it is guilt, defeat, a sense of failure or even just anger that leads to the hardness, we certainly can’t wait to see how everything plays out. With so many heroes simply wiped out of existence, it looks like Avengers 4 means the survivors have a lot on their plates when it comes to fixing this mess.
