Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: 3 questions after the new photos

The new photos for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina show both sides of Sabrina Spellman, but they still leave some mysteries unsolved.

Fall can’t some soon enough for a multitude of reasons, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina‘s first season on Netflix is definitely among them. Promising all the witchery we can handle, the series finally dropped not one, but two images earlier today.

If you’ve seen pretty much anything from Riverdale, then the aesthetic of the two photos probably won’t surprise you; Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is involved in both. But beyond that, these two photos do raise some questions about the direction that the series will take.

Let’s dive right in, shall we?

Which is more important: Sabrina’s human side or her witching side?

Each of the two photos evokes something specific. The first is all about Sabrina alone, practically evoking Little Red Riding Hood with the read coat and the blurry, woodsy background. The second is much more in line with the horror roots of the source comic, and even the white dress Sabrina wears should be familiar.

The thing is, by choosing these two photos, the series gives off the impression that the two are equally important. That might not actually be the case in the series. After all, we’ve been promised chills.

Will Sabrina finish the rite pictured?

Becoming a witch isn’t just about learning spells; in the world of the comics, there are some other things that need to be done. The man standing before a kneeling Sabrina is Father Blackwood, described by Deadline as “High Priest of the Church of Night and Dean of the Academy of the Unseen Arts,” meaning that he could be inducting Sabrina into the Church of Night.

However, in the original comics, a similar rite gets interrupted, which brings us to our next question.

Where’s Harvey?

The interruption comes at the hands of one Harvey Kinkle, and he’s curiously not pictured in the photo. Instead, it seems only members of the church itself are present at the moment. Will that plot point cross over from the comics?

Interestingly, this image is also labeled as “102,” possibly meaning it’s from the second episode of the series. The above image is labeled “101.” It’s too early to read much into that, but perhaps it’ll end up meaning something.
