Insecure season 3 preview: Issa’s struggle with adulting has just begun

The season premiere of Insecure gives us a chance to finally catch up with our favorite 30-something queens!

Although the trailer for the latest season of Insecure, which premieres Sunday, moves through scenes pretty quickly, there was enough information to make a few predictions about how the next season will play out.

Kelli utters the first spoken line of the nearly two-and-a-half minute trailer for season 3 of Insecure, declaring that she and her crew, which includes protagonist Issa (Issa Rae), Molly (Yvonne Orji) and Tiffany (Amanda Seales) are “30, single and thriving.” And, ostensibly, that’s true.

Issa is still at We Got Y’all (we see a shot of her and Freida) and living with Daniel and, surprise, she hasn’t slept with him…yet. She’s also taking her finances more seriously. She buys a shiny new whip (and even carts Molly around) and starts putting away money so she can move out on her own.

Molly left her old job for a new (all Black) law firm and is feeling confident enough to ask for the pay and perks she thinks she deserves. She also finally puts Dro in his place (or at least she claims to) and broadens her dating horizons.

Lawrence is out of the picture (at least for now) and we don’t see too much of Kelli and Tiffany, but they appear to be up to their usual shenanigans. Tiffany is preggo, as we revealed in the season finale recap, and Kelli is still serving one-liners and real advice for days. Even Daniel excels as his music producing career finally takes off.

But this is Insecure and there is still some drama that will certainly unfold this summer, mainly with Issa, who continues to struggle with feeling stuck at We Got Y’all. Issa’s doing quite a bit of paper pushing in the scenes from her job, so it’s fair to assume that she either got demoted or her responsibilities shifted after her mishap with the tutoring sessions. To make matters worse, while she’s trying to do better, Issa still struggles financially. One of the scenes in the trailer shows her going to Kelli for money advice and being disappointed when Kelli tells her she still doesn’t quite have enough funds to move out on her own.

Even though Issa still hasn’t slept with Daniel, the temptation is there and the two seem to get physical in a couple clips from the preview. Issa also maybe hasn’t quashed her feelings for him as she announces to her friends that she’s planning to ask him if she can stay longer.

We don’t see a lot of the drama for other characters, but no doubt there will be some (maybe we’ll finally get more deets about Tiffany’s marriage to Derek, because we KNOW it’s not perfect). But, that’s what Sunday nights are for.
