Get to typing, because Sebastian Stan is here for your fanfic
Sebastian Stan encourages fans to write “the stories you want to see,” and fans had quite the reaction about this encouragement.
When Bucky and many other favorite characters were turned into dust in Avengers: Infinity War, fans were left devastated. Luckily, fan fiction is always there to help soothe our broken hearts and give us the stories we dream of.
While many people in fandom already turn to fan fiction as a way to explore their creativity and imagine alternate, happier endings (as well as to see ships and character interactions that don’t make it to the screen), it is less common for actors or filmmakers to encourage the creation of fan fiction. Sebastian Stan gave fans hope and encouragement in their fan fiction writing in a recent interview, however.
While talking with Earth’s Mightiest Show, the Marvel actor touched on a variety of topics including fans who are still sad over Bucky’s fate in the movie.
"It is hard, and I feel like — you know, write down your feelings. You should write down the stories you want to see. Write down what you want to have happen with your favorite characters."
The host of the show asked him if he was talking about fan-fic, and he expounded further.
"Yeah, why not? I think that would be a good way to deal with it. And then you might actually maybe have it come true, I don’t know. Never say never, right? It’s possible."
Fans have already been writing about Bucky for years, and he is a favorite to be shipped with other characters. Fans on Twitter had mixed emotions about Stan’s encouragement. Some were excited by his positive reaction to fans writing fic, but others reminded other fans to not send Stan explicit fan fiction about himself.
It would be a dream come true for a fan’s fiction piece to make it to the big screen, though that isn’t always the goal when writing these creative pieces. The great thing about fan fiction is that the possibilities are endless. In one story, Bucky can be goat farming in Wakanda and dating Steve, and in another, writers can explore Bucky’s dark past as The Winter Soldier.
And all of that fan fiction coming through, whether it was before or after Stan’s encouragement, just goes to show how Marvel and the Avengers could gain a high spot in this year’s Fandom 250.
The canon fate of Bucky remains to be seen, but, as Stan pointed out, at least we’ll always have fan fiction to make us feel better!
