Star Wars Episode IX rumor: A possible Rogue One connection?

New rumors have reached the internet about where Star Wars: Episode IX could possibly take production, but how could this work?

Technically speaking, Star Wars: Episode IX doesn’t start filming until tomorrow, Aug. 1. However, that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from firing up. Earlier today, Making Star Wars reported that it has heard from its sources that Jordan will get a visit from Episode IX at some point.

While MSW puts forward two possibilities for what planet Jordan could play, it’s the second that’s more intriguing. Why? Well, not only is it Jedha — already a major planet in the Star Wars canon — but it’s also a place that Jordan has already played host to.

MSW proposes that Rey might go to the planet thanks to its connection with the Force, and with Luke Skywalker now probably (definitely) a Force Ghost, her best chance for something a little more… tangible… is probably Jedha at this point. (Thanks, Yoda.) It’s a long shot, but this is Star Wars. Han’s “Never tell me the odds” is just a verbal acknowledgment of how the series lets its heroes do the impossible.

Beyond that, though, Jedha is a representation of not only what the Empire was capable of, but what the First Order wants to do again that’s able to be stood upon, unlike somewhere like Alderaan. If we’re going to get a Kylo Ren redemption arc (and we’re not taking it off the table, much as we don’t want it to happen), Rey forcing him to see what his grandfather effectively sanctioned might help her bring him back to the light.

Hey, Darth Vader does try to get the plans back.

It’s not impossible for MSW’s other suggestion, Jakku, to move production to Jordan. However, MSW does ignore a key part of The Force Awakens in its case for Jakku. Maz Kanata tells Rey, “The belonging you seek is not behind you. It is ahead.”

So going back to Jakku might not make quite as much sense at Jedha. Regardless, this is still just a rumor at this point — but one that could bear fruit as filming really gets underway. Keep checking back at Culturess for all the latest.
