The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
What you’re watching: A reboot of a beloved show. However, this remake of Sabrina the Teenage Witch is not as family friendly as the Melissa Joan Hart original from ABC. This version more closely resembles the comic version and promises to be darker, grittier, and take a much closer look at its occult underpinnings.
Kiernan Shipman (Mad Men) plays the title character, and the show is set in the Midwest around mid-century. It shares a showrunner (and comic universe) with Riverdale, so it promises to offer a neo-noir edge. Shipman plays the title character, living in Greendale trying to navigate new powers, a creepy new town, and all sorts of teenage girl ennui.
What it reminds you of: Since it shares a lot of the creative minds as Riverdale, it’s bound to feel a little familiar. Although, while Riverdale dances right up to the supernatural and stops short, Adventures embraces it wholeheartedly. It might just fill the witch-sized hole in our hearts left by Witches of East End and Eastwick.
Long-term potential: So, so high. This looks amazing. With Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa teaming up with Netflix, and dipping into an already intrigued and engaged fan-base, I’ve got really high hopes. Riverdale was such a success over at The CW, imagine what its showrunner can do at Netflix. I’ve only seen a tiny bit of this, but I’m all the way in.
