25 of the most buzzworthy new shows for Fall 2018

What you’re watching: This show is the inevitable spin-off to ABC’s period comedy, The Goldbergs.  This show picks up a decade later, in the ’90s, and tells the story of the teachers of the Goldberg kids’ alma mater, William Penn Highschool. You’ll recognize AJ Michalka as Lainey, Tim Meadows as Principal Glascott, and Bryan Callen as Coach Mellor.

What it reminds you of: The network and writers are hoping you’ll draw some straight lines from the hit family sitcom that’s already been airing for 4 seasons to this show. It’s doubtful that this show will grab fans that haven’t seen The Goldbergs. There’s no trailer yet, but it seems like it might have an AP Bio feel to it, although it’s probably a little more family friendly than the raunchy NBC series.

Long-term potential: Despite the popularity of its source material, this show probably won’t find much traction. Spinoffs are tricky maneuvers, and although they work sometimes, it’s tough to make them work in the long run. I imagine the ’90s setting will get some eyeballs initially, especially for folks who came of age during the time of Beverly Hills, 90210, scrunchies, and slap bracelets, but it’s going to have to work to keep these folks around.
