Boggarts in the wizarding world: Newt Scamander’s vs Harry Potter’s

A boggart can tell you a lot about a wizard and when it comes to Newt Scamander and Harry Potter, their choice of fear is very telling of who they become.

In the trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, a young Newt faces a boggart and his encounter compared to Harry Potter’s is very different. Everyone fears different things, there is no argument about that.

But the fact that Harry feared something very real in that moment, something lurking in the depths of his mind, shows that he was always on alert. Newt, however, feared working at a desk job. Newt saw the future and didn’t want to be constrained. Harry saw the present and wanted to survive it.

Newt and Harry are two of the greatest wizards that ever were. So it is so interesting that these two were that drastically different. It is clear in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child that Harry didn’t really want a desk job either but it isn’t exactly his greatest fear.

Maybe it is just because he wants to be free of the chains of wizarding and find animals on his own but Newt doesn’t seem like the kind of person to be that afraid of it all. Clearly he is but his boggart could really have been anything.

Instead, he chose a desk. Harry chose a dementor. Both express the fears of these characters but also they show us what they’re truly thinking in that moment. Harry is always about the present, figuring out what’s at hand while Newt wants to plan for the future and that’s what makes them both so great.
