Fantastic Beasts Comic-Con trailer hints Newt’s expulsion?

Did the Fantastic Beasts Comic-Con trailer give us a hint at how Newt Scamander was expelled at Hogwarts?

Warning, this post will go into detail about the latest Fantastic Beasts Comic-Con trailer and a theory about the upcoming Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald movie. It can be classed as a spoiler, if you wish to remain spoiler free, stop reading and leave now.

Warner Bros decided to release their Fantastic Beasts Comic-Con trailer in Hall H today and there is a lot to talk about. Connections to the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone plus connections to the other Harry Potter movies and more are all there for us to see.

More from Harry Potter

One moment within the trailer that really caught my attention is if the trailer just hinted at Newt’s expulsion? Are we going to see how Newt Scamander was expelled from Hogwarts in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald?

Newts Expulsion

It’s not clear why Newt was expelled from Hogwarts. There are several different theories about what he did, but so far nothing has been confirmed, but what they do all agree was that Newt was expelled for endangering human life.

Considering that Newt is famed for being a Magizoologist and his fondness of animals it is agreed, although not by everyone, that this endangerment of human life involved magical creatures. Casting a similar situation to how Hagrid was expelled.

However, thanks to Dumbledore, Newt never lost his wand, unlike Hagrid, and was still permitted to perform magic.

Will the answer be given in The Crimes of Grindelwald?

The upcoming Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald movie might be about to clear up the mystery behind Newts expulsion from Hogwarts and the recent Fantastic Beasts Comic-Con trailer may have given us a hint to that.

During the trailer we can see Dumbledore teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts and the spell Riddikulus to combat a Boggart. This spell forces the Boggart to transform from what you fear the most into something you do not.

In the trailer, we see Newt’s Boggart is a desk. For Newt fears a desk job. Makes sense really, he loves magical creatures; the last thing he would want is a desk job. So when he casts Riddikulus, what might the desk transform into?

Have you made the connections yet?

A magical creature; that is what I’m betting his Boggart will transform into. A magical creature that, to Newt, is harmless but not to everyone else. And in that moment a student, or students, will then be put in danger. Therefore leading to the events of Newt’s expulsion.

This would also play nicely into how Dumbledore came to Newt’s defense. If Dumbledore had not taught the class, would this have ever happened in the first place? Maybe because Dumbledore took part the blame, Newt was allowed to keep his wand but was expelled from Hogwarts all the same.

It’s only a theory but one I think may turn out to be right.
