A League of Their Own (1992)

It’s bizarre looking at the 1990s, considering it’s been nearly 30 years since they took place. Yet the films included in these next five slides seem worlds away from the features of the ‘70s or where we started in the ‘30s. This is a fancy way of saying that by the time the decade started, it was time to start memorializing the years that gave us classic cinema. Director Penny Marshall’s A League of Their Own is both a glorification of ‘40s cinema as well as a true to life story about the first all-American Girls Baseball team.

With a cast comprised of the best of ‘90s cinema, including Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, Madonna, and Rosie O’Donnell, Marshall crafts a film that’s funny, endearing, and tells a story most audiences had never heard before. The film is reminiscent of classic ‘40s baseball films like Pride of the Yankees, with the ‘90s simplicity and witty one-liners we’d come to appreciate from the films of this period.

Hanks’ “there’s no crying in baseball” line is well-known, whether you’ve seen the film or not, but what’s more important is how it showed women overcoming the odds and taking an active role in a man’s sport.
