Florida: Golden Girls

The premise: At it’s most basic, Golden Girls is about a group of the coolest, smartest, baddest women you’ll ever meet living together in a large home in Miami. They lean on each other through all their dating, professional, and family troubles, and make life after 50 seem the most glamorous it could possibly be.

In the interest of full disclosure, I’ll admit that I am an insanely devoted fan of this show. And  Dorothy, Blanche, Rose, and Sophia really hold up, even after all these years.

The setting: The ladies live together in Miami, Florida. They have active social lives, and we often see them out on the town, enjoying the Miami nightlife. Although the ladies are all from varying parts of the country, they came to Miami as part of their semi-retirement. Even though they’re reaching their third phase, they still really enjoy the sunny warm weather of south Florida.

The most Florida thing about it: The women are constantly referencing the heat and the humidity, which anyone who has ever stepped foot in Florida, or in the South in general, understands on a cellular level. The house they share also has spacious patio that the characters insist on calling it a “lanai.” I don’t think anybody anywhere else calls it this.
