Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, could it be delayed until 2019?

Niantic’s next big game, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, is still expected to be released in 2018, but could a delay until 2019 be on the horizon with everything going on?

Niantic, the brains behind Pokemon Go, have been teasing their next big game, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite for some time now. Expected to be released at some point this year, no official news has been released by the Software Company for some time now.

With the year half way done now, the question needs to be asked. Is it possible the AR game will not come out at all this year and in fact be delayed until 2019?

Why would it be delayed until 2019?

What you need to remember is Niantic has Pokemon Go to manage. Right now the AR game is doing extremely well, nothing like we seen when it was first released in 2016 but better than it has done recently.

Despite all the success with Pokemon Go, Niantic has had its share of problems with the game. Plagued by delays, technical issues, etc, they will want to ensure nothing else goes wrong, especially at this time of success, so all eyes at Niantic are on Pokemon Go right now.

Apart from the distraction by their number one game, timing for the release of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is a major factor as well. The ideal time for releasing the game is the summer. They will want to capitalize on the kids being out of school and the warm weather.

This leaves a very narrow window to release the game. Now they could just release it to the world without prior notice but it seems unlikely. They will want to make a big deal about the games releases, especially with the competition of Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery. So a quiet launch seems unlikely.

This leaves an even narrow window of opportunity. Summer only has a few months to go and unless they decide to release the AR game very shortly, they will have missed the ideal window. And we won’t even go into the licenses agreement issues they will have to handle with Warner Bros. either. Therefore they may wish to hold off the launch until 2019.
