Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery pets: Should one have been free?

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery finally added pets to its game. However, fans soon realized that it would cost to add any one of them in. Should at least one have been free to obtain?

Jam City updated Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery at the end of last month, finally bringing in pets. Players now have the chance to have a rat, toad, cat, or owl. In fact, you can have one of each and wake them up to offer you extra energy during times of needs. That’s all well and good, except that every pet costs gems to obtain—and gems mean money.

Of course, it’s just another instance of the game requiring fans to pay to play. The manufacturers do need to make money, after all, but it’s brought up a question. Should one of the pets been free? Just the toad or rat would have been suitable as a free pet and then use gems to by the others. Or maybe the first pet purchase of any kind could have been free, with subsequent pet purchases costing gems.

More from Harry Potter

Right now, toads and rats cost 160 gems each. That’s about $6.14, based on the fact that a pack of 130 gens (the standard pack) is $4.99. Cats are a little more expensive at 215 gems, which is about $8.25. It shouldn’t be surprising that the owl is the most expensive, costing about $12.28 with 320 gems needed. While there are certainly players out there who will be able to afford the pets, there are others who can’t. All they want is a game that they have the chance to enjoy for free. While there may be some limitations to that, shouldn’t the first pet be on the house?

Of course, the argument against the pet being free is that pets in Harry Potter aren’t free. Some are passed down through families, but for the most part, the students have to buy their pets before they attend Hogwarts. Making all pets a purchase does keep the reality within the universe.

The purchase will work out to your advantage, too. The pets can be used in challenges, offering you more energy throughout the games so you can complete your missions. It may be worth buying a pet rather than spending extra money on gems throughout the game!
