5 things you shouldn’t do during a convention’s Q&A
At ACE Comic Con Seattle, some fans got a little rowdy during the Civil War panel. We offer a little breakdown of what not to do at a con’s Q&A session.
ACE Comic Con in Seattle was going seemingly well this past weekend. Then the Captain America: Civil War panel with Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, and Tom Holland started. When the weekend began, most fans knew that it was going to get crazy because Sebastian and Anthony tend to gang up on Tom. The thing is: They are actors.
They do it as a comedy bit, for the laughs you know? Some fans may blow it out of proportion and think it is a serious thing. Or in the case of this panel, they think that they can pile on. It was rude, unnecessary, and definitely a mess. We’re going to go through five things you shouldn’t do at a convention Q&A.
5. Don’t ask for things
Don’t go up without a question and expect celebrities to give you things. Want a selfie? Don’t ask here (you can pay like everyone else). Want a shoutout for your friend? Don’t waste the time of everyone in the room by not asking questions and instead, making it about shouting out to people.
It’s okay, you want your friends included and that’s amazing! But going up to the microphone without a question and just babbling for the sake of standing in front of that actor isn’t fair to anyone else.
4. Make sure your question makes sense
We all get nervous and that’s okay. Fumble your words a bit? That’s fine! Ask a question about whether or not they’d want to be a muffin or not know what babies look like? Maybe don’t.
Sure there are times when you think you have a great question and it flops — that’s normal. But asking inappropriate or insanely odd things is a waste of time, kind of like what we noted in our first point.
This is a moment to get to know someone you idolize, don’t waste it by asking them about eating babies. It’s not fun for them or anyone else.
3. This isn’t time for your shining moment
While it is your time to ask your favorite a question, it isn’t the time to be the star of the show. There are exceptions. If the celebrity recognizes you and makes it about you, great! That’s not on you! But don’t go up and tell them your Instagram handle because you want followers.
It’s a time to ask a question and have a moment with your fave celeb. Not to promote yourself.
2. Don’t go off topic just because you want to
At a specific Q&A, don’t go and bring something random up. Let’s say you’re attending a panel that screens a movie and the Q&A is for that movie — an example being I, Tonya. Don’t ask how Bucky Barnes would have viewed the Tonya Harding scandal. (He wouldn’t have been aware of it, he was the Winter Soldier.)
1. Don’t insult the celebrities
Going back to this specific convention in Seattle, it is all fine until you stand up and insult a celebrity, as some did to Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan. These celebrities dedicate their weekends to the fans and this is the thanks they get? It isn’t fair, and it can be grounds for celebrities not wanting to do future events because of it
