21. Mario and Luigi from Super Mario Bros.

Look, we love Super Mario Kart. And for that matter Super Smash Brothers. Maybe some of us even love that movie from the 1990s where Mario and Luigi are real people. The point is that we love the Super Mario Brothers and the fact that women don’t play as them a lot is baffling.

Maybe it is because they’re typically depicted as two chubby Italian men running around trying to win over the affection of Princess Peach? Still, it is fun to see a woman take on one of the roles. The problem with a lot of cosplays of these two is that they’re “sexy Mario and Luigi’.” Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but what if they were the two chubby men we love so much?

Cosplay is about interpretation and sometimes the best cosplays are the ones who stick to what we love and just recreate it. Especially when they’re recreating Mario and Luigi for women. You don’t have to wear a fake mustache. But we wouldn’t mind seeing more genderbent Marios and Luigis, and perhaps an adorable Yoshi tagging along.
