10. Cop Rock

What it is: A police procedural combined with a musical, produced by Steven Bochco. From the same producer as Hill Street Blues, the show was unlike anything on TV. Critics of the time panned it aggressively and relentlessly, suggesting it might be the most bizarre show of all time. It was a strange combo, having hardened police officers break out into song during some of the most intense moments of the drama was tonally confusing and hard to accept.

The yuck factor: There’s not much yuck here, but there is a lot of embarrassment to contend with. It’s so bad, you often have to avert your eyes. You don’t know whether to laugh or flinch. Bochco is known for his gritty, hard-hitting dramas, so this show was a complete surprise to fans and audiences.

Cop Rock only ran for one season — it just couldn’t find an audience — but Bochco didn’t fair too poorly. He also produced LA Law, Doogie Houser M.D., and NYPD Blue. This show has since become a running joke and a cult hit.

Where and how: If you’re wondering how such a show is even possible, you can watch the pilot on YouTube. If you’re into it, you will have to purchase the episodes on Amazon.
