6. The Bold Type

The rundown: Three young single ladies work for a posh Manhattan magazine; one in the editorial department, one in social media, and the other in fashion. They’re best friends, impossibly beautiful, sophisticated, and extremely savvy about the world.

Jane, Kat, and Sutton struggle to balance their professional lives with their romantic endeavors, all the while trying to be taken seriously and understand the world they live in. The show succeeds at almost everything it does, so don’t be fools at it’s glossy, Freeform format.

Why it’s summer fun: Even while the ladies are taking on huge issues — immigration, sexual politics, promotions — they approach their lives with an effervescence that is downright contagious. It never feels frilly, although there is a fair amount of fluff and teen-drama tropes.

They are impeccably dressed, well-read, and have a heart for each other and the lives of other women. I have written about this show several times, and I will continue to brag about it until it gets the recognition it deserves.

Yes, it can hold its own with the network’s predecessors of Pretty Little Liars and The Fosters, it has a personality all its own that transcends the genre and the demographic.

How to watch it: I don’t usually describe TV in this way, and there are few shows I could say this about, but season 1 of The Bold Type is very close to being a perfect season of television. It’s available on Hulu now, and season two premieres on Freeform with a two-hour season premiere.
