“Dancing Queen” by ABBA
Yet again, do we really need to explain this one?
“Dancing Queen” by ABBA is iconic for obvious reasons, and will no doubt always be welcome on Pride playlists for years to come, even if it has already been decades since the group released it.
Let’s put it this way: if a song is about a dancing queen, how do you think a bunch of dancing queens will feel when it comes on? You may not be young and sweet, only 17, but you can dance and have the time of your life. Everyone is a dancing queen when this classic comes on, and like most of the songs on this list, it’s best enjoyed while shouting out the lyrics and throwing your hands in the air.
Pride season is all about celebrating your freedom to be whoever you want to be and relishing the fact that, in 2018, you can safely do so, at least in North America. A song like “Dancing Queen” is so ubiquitous with carefree fun and celebrating that it’s perfect for the occasion.
Disco always finds its way to make little comebacks with subtle influences on modern pop songs, but nothing will ever compare with the real deal. ABBA was the epitome of disco and they ruled the scene for a reason. They made people want to dance, and wasn’t that what disco was really all about?
The LGBTQ community has always been supporters of disco music, so it’s no wonder that even after all these years, people of all ages are embracing the classics. It helps bridge the gaps between generations, and that sounds like a pretty great message for Pride festivities.
