“Finally” by CeCe Peniston
Some of the songs on this list are just inherently queer songs, others are by artists who are worshiped in the LGBTQ community, but this song has found its way onto our list for being part of queer cinema history.
“Finally” by CeCe Peniston appears in the cult classic drag movie The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. During one of the climactic scenes, the three queens, Mitzi, Felicia, and Bernadette finally make it to the hotel their performing at after a rough few days on the road. Even though the crowd seems less than enthused by their performance, it was enough to always stick with us as the “song from Priscilla.”
Of course, it doesn’t only deserve a spot on this list because of the movie it’s from. “Finally” is a classic 90s dance hit, and in typical ’90s fashion, it had a power vocalist over a funky, electronic beat.
It was the era of dance songs, and this list could be entirely ’90s dance tracks and nobody would complain. Honestly, if a Pride event had a playlist was just this, a bunch of Aqua and Vengaboys songs, and “Believe” by Cher, everyone would probably be just fine.
That chorus will get you every time, though. When you hear “Finally! It has happened to me!” you will be singing along, even if you don’t know the words. You’ll be dancing, even if you never dance. A great dance song can bring out that confidence in you, and if there’s anytime to let it out, it’s during Pride!
