Legion season 2 episode 9 review: Chapter 17

Melanie Bird becomes the focal point of this week’s Legion. Last week, we learned she was under the Shadow King’s spell… so what’s become of her?

At the end of last week’s Legion, we learned Melanie Bird was under the spell of the Shadow King. Farouk had her in his grasp but we didn’t know why or how. All we knew was that Melanie liked getting high and contemplating men and why we love them.

So this week, the show took a bit of a turn again back to the character-driven episodes we love so much. And the fact that it was about Melanie Bird is that much more intriguing. Always an interesting figure, Melanie has seemingly taken a backseat this season since Oliver became entranced by the Shadow King.

Little did we know at the time that Melanie was in the same boat. But now that we do, it makes sense. The idea that this strong woman who spent her life and her work trying to save her husband would be rendered useless and just sit around and get high was questionable at best.

But with how the Shadow King treated David when he was in his mind (getting him high all the time and continually trying to ruin everything he had going for him) it makes sense that Melanie would be under his spell.

We just weren’t connecting the dots. So while this episode was pretty great, it also gave insight into things throughout the season that we were just not seeing and that’s what makes Legion so amazing.
