Girls

A little more self-indulgent than other shows on the list, the HBO series Girls is more for the moodier single set. Less about letting go and having fun, and more about over-thinking and hyper-analyzing, Girls will make you feel fine about anything embarrassing or humiliating thing you’ve done in and around a relationship.

Ultra self-aware and all amateur psychiatrists, the ladies in Girls have far more entitlement and unfounded expectations than they do common sense. However, this show is really great at helping you indulge a good ol’ fashioned sulk. These women aren’t afraid to lose their cool, single or not, and don’t seem to have an ounce of self-consciousness in them. Whew… how freeing would it be to just sit right down on a city street curb and cry about your problems — however small or insignificant they may be?

Hannah, played by the infamous Lena Dunham, is probably the most self-absorbed of the bunch, and I love her as a fictional avatar for my darkest single inclinations. Sure, everybody is always saying how you have to be happy with who you are and your circumstances, but Hannah doesn’t feel any such pressure.

She screams when she’s mad, tells folks off when she thinks they deserve it and isn’t afraid to lament her relationship status. She makes being single look as excruciating as it is sometimes, and it’s refreshing to let our psychological hair down.

Where to watch: Created by Dunham herself for HBO, you can only watch it there or with the HBO add-on for Hulu.
