The Bold Type

Young and fun, The Bold Type takes a look at what we all wish our 20s were. It focuses on three young women, working (sort of) entry-level jobs at a posh magazine in Manhattan. They are clever and head-strong, and just watching these three makes me feel vicariously carefree and determined to get the most out of life.

Sutton, Jane, and Kat are wildly different and have varying levels of romantic attachment. Jane is the studious writer of the bunch, and throughout season 1, we get to watch her come into her sexual own with hunky men with strong jawlines and skinny ties. Kat finds love with an international artist, Adena, and they have to grapple with issues of immigration and long distance. Jane has a boyfriend, but he’s her boss and they have to keep things secret. All very complicated and messy, but they’re charming enough to keep it from getting bogged down.

While the three are not necessarily single all the same time, their quirky and outrageous adventures will make you long for the days when 2 AM wasn’t all that late, and you could eat pizza without worrying about the calories. It recalls a time before carpools, 401(k)s, or therapy. Watching these ladies live their lives without abandon and with a healthy dose of whimsy makes me feel okay about living life without a partner. I want to be like The Bold Type when I grow up.

Where to watch: With only one season under its belt, it won’t take you long to catch up. It’s available on Hulu or Freeform’s website. Be warned: it will inspire you to have summer adventures and stay up way too late.
