Secret Diary of a Call Girl

I’m reluctant to describe a show as “sexy” but there’s no other way to talk about the Showtime treat Secret of a Call Girl. Starring Billie Piper as a high-end prostitute with an endlessly glamorous and sophisticated lifestyle.

Piper plays Hannah Baxter by day and Belle by night. She only takes on the most adoring and exclusive clients, and she reaps the financial benefits. Her parent and close friends think she works as a legal secretary, and the stress of leaving the double life causes most of the conflict in her life.

Although her work as Belle affords her a lot of nice things and luxuries, Hannah longs for a more normal life. I find this so relatable because any woman who has more than one thing going on in her life can understand the internal tug of war that happens. Most of us aren’t hitting the streets as an escort, but a lot of us have careers, children, and obligations that make leading a “normal” life seem unattainable.

If there is a lesson to learn here, it is to do away with our ideas about what is traditionally “normal” because there is no such thing. Whether she is Hannah or Billie, she’s just doing her best to make herself a good life.

Where to watch: You can watch the second through fourth seasons on Showtime Anytime or Hulu’s Showtime extension. The first season is a little harder to find, and you might have to cough up the money for the episodes on Amazon.
