Grace and Frankie
I know we’re supposed to talk about the main characters’ ages and how they are gracefully moving into this phase of their life as mature women… blah blah blah. However, I can’t just diminish this show to an “old lady” program. The fact of the matter is that these women are living their best life, and any woman, of any age, would covet how these women live.
Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin play the gorgeous and interminable Grace and Frankie, respectively. Their husbands, law partners and lifelong friends, have been having a secret affair for 40 years, and in season 1, they decide to come out to their wives. Divorces and breakdowns ensue, but eventually, the four of them find an interesting rhythm with each other.
While the husbands are together and living a happy life, Grace and Frankie have to learn to be single again and in their 70s. They pair up in a beautiful, Nora Ephron-style beach house, and plot to make up for lost time. And trust me, they certainly do make up for it. Grace is prim and buttoned down, but it doesn’t stop her from making the most of some very hunky guest stars — Sam Elliot and Peter Gallagher to name a couple.
Frankie is a free spirit and artist and floats through life on a veil of positive vibes and marijuana smoke. Together, they are yin and yang of determination and aspirational retirement. Hell, I wish I was living their life right now, and I’m not even close to their age.
Where to watch: It’s a Netflix original, and all four seasons are available now.
