A list of 100 essential books by female authors has been announced and J.K. Rowling has made the list with Harry Potter.

Chosen for the third book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, J.K. Rowling has joined the list of top 100 essential books by female authors over the past 100 years.

Published in 1999, The Prisoner of Azkaban came ahead of all the other wizarding world books because of the introduction of the dementors. The soul-sucking creatures, that resemble wraiths, guarded those witches and wizards who broke the law and were sent to the wizarding prison, Azkaban for their crimes.

They were a dark introduction, an introduction that was a turning point in the Harry Potter series. No longer was Harry Potter bright and breezy, but dark and sometimes hopeless.

Top 100 essential books

The list of top 100 essential books was put together after three months of voting. Hundreds took part in the  #VOTE100BOOKS campaign.

Part of the Hay Festival, the annual literary and arts event revealed the final list, which celebrates woman in literature, to coincide with the centenary of women first gaining the right to vote in 1918.

The festival itself runs from May 24 to June 3. Appearances from Margaret Atwood, Ian McEwan, and Salman Rushdie are all to take place with approximately 800 events featuring during the festival.

So what do you think about J.K. Rowling making the top 100 list? Do you think it is well deserved? Do you think Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was the right book? Leave a comment below with your thoughts.
