Solo: A Star Wars Story’s Smuggler’s Bounty box plays it safe
For a box named after a scoundrel like Han Solo, there’s an awful lot of playing it safe in May’s Smuggler’s Bounty box. Here’s what’s inside.
Han Solo is one of our favorite characters in Star Wars. There’s really no other way to express it. Harrison Ford’s performance is iconic, and it’s based on the love of his character and his work that we have this little movie called Solo: A Star Wars Story coming out later this week. Unsurprisingly, this month’s Smuggler’s Bounty box is all about Han … well, more accurately, it’s about things featured in the movie.
Let’s get started with the wearable of this month’s box: a Mud Trooper hat. The patch looks pretty great, even if the color isn’t stellar. We’re never averse to more kinds of stormtroopers — if only to give the members of the 501st Legion something new to fabricate while we marvel over their skills. But it’s a weird choice for a hat, truth be told. This seems like a box that really could have done well with a shirt, maybe even a shirt featuring Qi’ra or some of the other new characters in the film.

The other two accessories are a blaster keychain and a Smuggler’s Bounty pin featuring Enfys Nest. Good on Smuggler’s Bounty for featuring one of the villains of this movie, but a pin doesn’t seem like the right place for it. The pins generally represent the whole box — and Enfys Nest isn’t the whole of Solo. A Millennium Falcon pin would have really done well. As for the keychain, it’s another pretty standard choice and meant to represent Han’s blaster, although it’s tough to recognize it as Han’s more famous DL-44.

With Lando on the box, it’s no surprise that he’s also represented inside the box, with a Lando Mystery Mini based on the larger Pop! Hot Topic exclusive. I’ve said before that the Mystery Minis aren’t my favorites, but honestly, it’s Lando. I’m not complaining too much.

The expression, in particular, looks really great. What’s not to love about a raised eyebrow?
Finally, of course, are the Pop!s in the box. This month, it’s a 2-pack featuring Han and Chewbacca.

We’re still not sure what to make of Chewie not wearing his bandolier. The poor Wookiee looks naked! However, there are a lot of good details here — the fur partially over Chewie’s eyes, the dirt on Han’s face and the ankle chain chief among them. Even the double stand for them looks particularly cute and fitting.
All in all, this isn’t the best box or the worst one that we’ve ever seen from Smuggler’s Bounty. The Millennium Falcon seems like the biggest missing piece here, honestly. It’s been all over the marketing for the movie.
