Solo: A Star Wars Story star Donald Glover supports Lando being pansexual in space

Donald Glover weighs in on the buzzy brouhaha sparked by the news that his Solo: A Star Wars Story character Lando is pansexual.

First came the revelation from Solo: A Star Wars Story co-writer Jonathan Kasdan that Lando Calrissian, played by Donald Glover and Billy Dee, is pansexual. Talking to the Huffington Post, the Solo: A Star Wars Story writer responded with a clear-cut “yes” to the question about whether Lando’s sexuality should be qualified as pansexual.

“There’s a fluidity to Donald and Billy Dee’s sexuality,” declared Kasdan. Admitting that he would have “loved” to weave a more obviously LGBTQ role into Solo: A Star Wars Story, he added that he appreciates the “fluidity — sort of the spectrum of sexuality that Donald appeals to and that droids are a part of.”

It didn’t take long for Glover himself to get questioned about Kasdan’s Solo: A Star Wars Story bombshell that Lando is pansexual. Although the comment about Lando’s sexuality sparked a debate among some fans, Donald said that he supports the comments when he appeared on SiriusXM’s Entertainment Weekly Radio.

Twitter was already soaring high with speculation about whether Solo: A Star Wars Story would be the saga that finally revealed LGBTQ characters were alive and well in the galaxy.

Glover took the speculation along with Kasdan’s comments and went for it with the best possible response (we heart you even more, Donald).

"How can you not be pansexual in space? There are so many things to have sex with. I didn’t think that was that weird. Yeah, he’s coming on to everybody. I feel like if you’re in space it’s kind of like, the door is open! It’s like, [not] only guys or girls — no, it’s anything. This thing is literally a blob. Are you a man or a woman? Like, who cares? Have a good time out here."

Namaste.

Glover also talked with People about the advice he received from Billy Dee Williams, who played Lando Calrissian in The Empire Strikes Back. Donald revealed that William urged him to “just be charming.” Glover then took that advice and “amped it up.” That includes flirting with Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) and even referring to him as “baby.”

Be prepared to watch Donald “just be charming” as he flirts with female droid L3-37, portrayed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, famed as the creator of Killing Eve. Waller-Bridge described Lando’s relationship with the droid character to USA Today.

“The fact that they can be rude and short with each and they can boss each other around is actually what reveals their love for each other and trust for each other,” said the writer/actress.

“This world of Star Wars is just so accepting and beautiful that the idea a droid and a human are trying to waddle their way into a relationship is something that’s celebrated.”
