Did the right couple win Dancing with the Stars: Athletes?

A closer look at the other couples

Meanwhile, both of the other couples went for a fuller-picture display of their skills. To be fair, they had to, because both of the other two couples had ballroom styles to dance to in their first rounds.

First, Tonya and Sasha had a beautiful Viennese waltz — one that Len dubbed “beautifully danced.” There weren’t really frills to this one, but that didn’t matter, because it was all about the emotion and grace. But then she and Sasha sharply contrasted that with their high-energy freestyle:

She absolutely came to play, descending on a platform and coming out with a solo section before Sasha even showed up. But once he was on the floor, this number went to a new level, including some wicked tough lifts, acrobatics, a bit of disco and hustle and plenty of sparkles. Poor Bruno just looked tired watching, but he mustered the energy to dub her the “disco diva.” “It was terrific! Well done,” Len said. Carrie Ann just gave her a huge hug.

As for Josh and Sharna, it was impossible to hide their chemistry on the dance floor, even in foxtrot rather than the Latin styles. It was perhaps his most lyrical performance of the entire season, and to go to that in four short weeks is nothing less than impressive. Carrie Ann referred to a new “poetry” in dancing, and Bruno wished for an Argentine tango. (Seconded; can Josh be back on the next all-stars season with Sharna as a partner?)

When it came to his freestyle, though, he went for intensity and as both I and the judges noticed, power.

There were moments of slowness, then it sped up, but every single second put his power and grace on display. Bruno opened things by just noting how wet Josh was, which we can’t blame him for. Carrie Ann said it might have been Sharna’s best choreography ever.

None of this is to say that Adam and Jenna didn’t deserve to win. They, like the other two couples there, deserved the shot at the trophy. But the night of the finale felt like it belonged more to one of the other two couples. Hopefully, we’ll see them back sometime on the dance floor.
