During this week’s episode of The 100, fans will get a closer look at what ails the Eligius prisoners. “Shifting Sands” turns its focus to the physical threat that could very well jeopardize everyone left on Earth.

Last week’s episode of The 100 was full of decisions and reveals that undoubtedly altered the course of the fifth season. During “Pandora’s Box,” viewers discovered that the Eligius prisoners have more on their minds than simply claiming the valley for themselves.

It appears that they’re plagued by something dire, something that requires medical attention. The episode ends with them taking Abby and Kane hostage in the hopes that Abby will be able to help them find a cure. But even after all of this, viewers still don’t have much information regarding what the cure is for.

The preview for this week’s episode gives viewers a glimpse of it, though. Watch it here:

The trailer for “Shifting Sands” opens with a plea: “Please help us!” It shows someone running toward the Wonkru camp, as the group questions whether they’re under attack. And it’s completely possible that Eligius has resorted to biological warfare. They couldn’t wipe their enemies out with a missile, but they may be able to do so by spreading disease.

Viewers then get a shot of Clarke examining someone. It’s difficult to tell who she’s inspecting, but the man’s stomach is writhing alarmingly. “There’s something inside him,” she tells the others. It’s a brief but disturbing moment, and it offers the smallest hint as to what the illness entails.

We know that Eligius is responsible for the creation of Nightblood. Could whatever is running through this person’s body be related? If Nightblood took multiple tries to create, it’s possible that the Eligius inmates could have been involved in the first failed experiment.

At the end of the preview, Clarke tells the others, “We have to go back.” It’s unclear whether she means they need to go back to the valley or back into space. Either way, it’s inevitable that the group will confront Diyoza’s people once more. They do have half of their friends and family as captives.

But will Eligius and Wonkru continue warring over the valley, even while this mysterious disease lingers? Or will the two be forced to work together to resolve the problem?
